I surprised that no one has mentioned the Chigorin. Two great books have recently been written on it, and it's really common to see all the center pawns traded away in that line, since Black doesn't protect his d-pawn with a pawn, and also normally plays ..e5, stripping away all the pawns. Normally black gives up the bishop for active piece play and a well centralized queen.

Super-GM Morozovich was quite successful with the Chigorin Defense, and has recently published a book about the opening. (But, what can we infer from the fact that he no longer plays it?)
"Ideas Behind the Modern Chess Opening: Black" by IM Gary Lane recommends the Chigorin Defense.
"Play 1...Nc6!" by Christopher Wisnewski also touts the virtues of the defense.
The downside to all of this is that the surprise value of the Chigorin has been pretty much removed.

What would you consider to be the most open (tactically, spacially, etc.) but sound response Black could play against 1.d4?
I've thought about the Grunfeld, the Queen's Gambit Accepted, and even the Two Knight's Tango, but I'm looking for advice. All opinions welcome.
Originally posted by KorchI agree, though one thing that's always put me off it is that white can avoid it with 2.Nf3. However, I do seem to recall that browsing through Nigel Davies' book, I found he recommends 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c4 e5!? I wonder if that's really playable after 4.Nxe5. Of course, the Chigorin (3...Bg4) is a reasonable alternative, generally leading to a very open game.
I think it`s playable - at least in OTB.

Why not the KID?! Not sure if it is that open but things usually get pretty tactical. I'm still trying to use it the right but I'm sure that when I can do it I'll have a lot of fun.
KID is one of the most cramped lines possible following 1. d4
it's perfectly sound, and black gets great chances once he tries to blow up the center with a d5 or c5 pawn break, but I always kept getting strangulated.
