I have lost five games in a row. What is the best way to improve my chess playing skills?

Study your games you lost and improve? Study? Work harder? Don't blitz your moves? Annotate your games you lost and put them on the forumn for us to comment? idk

1. Take more time to analyse your moves.
2. Read a chess book.
3. Play some weaker opposition, occasionally stronger.
4. Swings and roundabouts... you'll soon have a winning streak.

The biggest thing for me is being careful and not blitzing. I'm still not very good at doing it every move, but when I do it I am able to play a lot stronger. Even blitzing ONE MOVE wrecks my game though.

In my game vs you (which is still in progress and you very well could win), I think that you got a superior position, but just made a blitz move taking my bishop and hanging your queen. I feel like if more time was spent on that move I would be a in a terribly lost position now. (this game is in progress so please no one look it up and comment on it).

Play stronger opposition, taking time over your moves and ask them to help analyse and comment on the game.

Oh how true indeed.

Game 4466097

Initially I played extremely carefully, checking databases, analyzing variations several times, but the sloppiness of that last capture will sting for a while.

I personally like to blitz, but there is a large difference between good and bad blitz days. One thing I highly recommend is that you move any games you really care about (i.e. all games in this tournament Tournament 1933) to a separate folder which you only move in once a day with access to a database when you're not feeling rushed.

Ahh yes I forgot the reason I posted in this thread was to suggest taking 1-3 days off. It really helps refocus me after 2 months of chess.

Well aside, from any technical improvements as suggested by the others getting a sense of perspective can help.

I went 20+ OTB games without winning. I didn't lose them all fortunately but it started to feel like I was never ever going to win a game again. I did in the end of course and I certainly learned that starting a game with a negative frame of mind is as good as starting a piece down.

Ultimately chess is only a game. Treating it like it actually matters (as I am prone to do) is unlikely to help the quality of your play.

Best of luck.

When I was a Kid whenever I was in a slump I'd stop playing and do lots of Tactics Problems from the book 1001 Combinations by Fred Rienfeld I did problems for 5 weeks then I started playing again roared back it recharged my batteries.

OK, I understand all the advice is a good thing. But I thought someone would have mentioned it by now: 5 losses in a row is a slump from hell? Pftttt.....

10, maybe. 15 definitely. But not 5. 😀

Well that was kind of implicit in my "I failed to win for 20+ games once" comment don't you think?

try chess.emrald.net for tactics.

and also search RHP forums for "how to get to 1400" (or something like that.)
