When the skull appears beside one of my games, what is the proper etiquette to claim the timeout win?

Should you message the opponent first and offer them one last chance to move or just go ahead and claim the win?

Thoughts/comments??

Click the skull. It's the same as the flag falling in an OTB game. There's no need to send a message and there's no reason to apologize. Threre's no need to warn in advance in your profile either. It is expected that your opponent know the rules of chess, and if his clock expires, you win as long as you claim it. Claim it immediately. Click the skull.

Agree: Click the skull.

In my profile anyone can read that I click the skull when in sight. Noone can accuse me of anything, they're warned.

But of course, if someone asks me not to time him out, of some legitimate reasons, and it is a friendly game (not tournament, not clan etc) then I don't...
(One opponent asked me politely, becase he was to serve time for a while, and he didn't know if they had internet connection where he was. Well, I'm an empathic soul).

You have the right to claim the time out win if you wish but it is your choice. There may well be circumstances where you'd like to give the opponent more time or send them a reminder first.

There is even an alert (if I remember rightly) that pops up stating you should only claim the win if you are sure your opponent doesn't wish to continue the game....or something like that.

You have these options but no obligations. From reading previous threads on this issue I got the impression the majority were in favour of clicking the skull and moving on.

Agreed: Click the skull !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless your opponent has a good reason as to why you shouldn't, and has told you well in advance of the skull appearing.

Even then of course it is still your decision to make.

Sometimes if it someone who I have had many games with or a regular tournament player whos name I recognize, I will send them a note.

I don't time out a lot of games, since I'm usually the one holding up the game. But your advice leads to a question... How do you know what the other person is telling you is true? "Why did you time me out, I have been in the hospital with cancer!~"

Don't ask why, don't care why. If you want to time a game out you have the right, but don't get into excuses and decisions based on what a stranger tells you. There is no way to know for sure if what they say is true or not, and you might actually not even want to know.

Well Good Points....I would do this only if it was someone who I had played many games with, or knew to be a regular tournament player!
Which has happened before, I do have a heart. 🙂

Of course with you, I would just CLICK THE SKULL ! 😛

You and I are about as close of friends I'VE EVER HAD! You're going to time me out?

LOL...I don't think you would let get to the point where the skull would appear. I have been here now since Oct./2006, some would say that is long enough. 😉 In all that time, you and I have never played a game of chess!

I just want you to know I had my sarcasm detector on and it hit red with your statement. 😉

I'm still working on the 2005 gang... remember I move slow.

The point I'm making is:

It is ok to time out users, but don't get into asking why they can't move. I once had a user tell me, "Sorry I wasn't able to move on time, just got back from chemotherapy".

Were they telling the truth? Who knows. I appologized for timing them out, when I should have just said "hope things are going alright".

I have no idea if they were telling the truth or not, and chances are they were not. At least I hope.

Yes, and your point is absolutely correct!

Personally, I would listen to the story, if it is before the skull has come up, and make a decision. Like I said in previous post if someone I have played with many times has a good reason, I would do it, and remind them they only have a two day period from the time the skull comes up, after than RHP makes the decision the game is timed out.

I do get your point, the person could be telling you an untrue story, and users should be aware of that.

He had the cancer etc before he accepted the game so unless prior agreement/friend click the skull
I played 14 games v Tom before he died, Ulster Champion in 1982,2003 and 2005, FIDE rating was 2137 and on his death bed he still made his moves and was never timed out.

Click it without delay.

I didn't like it when you could click skulls when your opponent was on vacation but there is no excuse for that now and if I can manage not to lose any games on time in over 2 years membership despite being away from a computer at times for over 2 weeks there is no excuse.

If you are taking your games seriously the skulls won't come up and if you don't take it seriously you deserve to lose.

If I've struck up a converstation with the opposition, I will not click the skull, I have had repeated opportunities to do so and still haven't given that scenario. We all have times when, maybe access to pc is limited, for whatever reason and, further still, I've gone on to play other games with these individuals without 'incident'...if the opposition enters no text and does not even enter a courtesy, 'good luck with the game,' or 'sorry I'm away for few days,' I'm afraid his skull is dead meat at first opportunity.. :-)
