I'd recommend "The mammoth book of chess" by graham Burgess. It covers all the basics in one volume: Tactics, Combination, Endgames, various openings (though I think online opening guides are easier to follow) and strategic examples. But the best thing it offers is small chess problems of various difficulties - this really improves the sharpness of your analysis.
