I understand the value of trying to pull things out when down material, I understand trying to trick your opponent into a three position repetition, and I understand hoping your opponent will make a mistake.
There is a point where making moves trying to stay alive the longest, or worse, not making moves
and delaying a deserved victory is just unsportsmanlike.
It seems to me none of the automatic draws works, probably because there is none. Especially the three fold, perpetual check and 50 move rule. This is kind of old fashioned in this day and age to not have proper software implemented into a chess service that oversees the rules, at most the basic ones. If the PGN is properly saved and retrived. Then its basically using that information to make a decision, "if", "then", "else". All the sites I play on use this with ease, except this one. No problems, I've personally seen it happen in a few of my games as well.It all goes along with the vacation feature, when on vacation you can time them out, too much faith that people will do the right thing. Should be automatic, nobody can time them out. Should have a feature with a reinstated timed out game as well. I have more but this should be good for started. 😠😠:'(:'(🙁😳😕😞😴
First: I am not complaining about the site. Russ and Chris can take their time implementing
things. If it is some problem for them to implement three-position repetition, then I trust their
coding judgment.
What I am talking about is just sportsmanship. If a fundamental rule of chess is being violated,
then I think it is up to the person to accept whatever consequences are due. If a person is playing
in a fundamentally unwinnable circumstance, then they should do the honorable thing and resign. To waste everyone's time with puttering around the board trying to last as long as they can is
juvenile.

All well and good, but remember those players who may be paying telephone charges for their time online.Or heaven forbid may have better things to do with their spare time. I am happy for opponents to play on for as long as they wish if they are getting something constructive from the game, but I do object to being used as a pawn in a MAP war that has very little to do with real chess. Having finished my moan I have to add this is the greatest chess site anywhere on the web

I often like to play a game to the death, even when my or my oppponents position is hopeless. Sometimes it's to continue the conversation (eg. as in my game against Shougi), sometimes it's to watch myself be ripped apart, sometimes to try against hope that I can pull something out of the bag.
And as with my game against Shougi, accidents happen - like me throwing away my rook.
And I never accept draws until it's certain neither side can win - I've lost many games that way, which just goes to show that I need the practice.
However your point is well taken. If someone is delaying a game to avoid points loss or gain moves then that is unsporting. Have you tried talking to you opponenents in these situations? If I was carrying on a game that I new was lost & my opponent said that he was bored & wanted me to resign I would. Maybe people out there don't understand the 3 fold rule etc. and need it explained?
I know there are people out there who are just being bloody minded, but here's a brighter side. One player wouldn't accept my draw offers (rook & pawn each) and we took about 20 pointless moves. Until he messed up & I got the win...
Originally posted by MontaguesI think you may be mistaked about the map war contestants' motives. They both have plenty of games going on and other moves to make. Rhymster seems to play on longer than Vaknso sometimes but then again, he can surprise people w/ his tactics sometimes. I don't think either one is staying in just for the moves.

I had a game against Pawnking one time when I kept thinking I would resign the next move. This happened for about 5 moves or so when I caught him off guard and wound up winning the game. So although you may be confident in victory, your opponent may not.
To clarify: I fully respect people wanting to continue (with just two kings even) IF (IF IF IF) they
both are benefiting (conversation, endgame, whatever). But to run around the board after a game
of silence when the conclusion is completely predictable -- this is what I am talking about, no bag
of tricks, nothing but intentional and pointless sacrifice could win -- is lame lame lame.
And, I think the MAP war is nice (I am sort of getting into it, on a monthly level), but when it
trumps fundamental chess etiquitte, it too is lame and unsportsmanlike.
