I am rated 1334.

I win one game to a player rated 1288 and lose one game to a player rated 1284... Overall, does my ratng increase or decrease?

it will go down but if you want to minimize your loss, lose the game first then win the other.

I don't think it matters unless you lose at least 25 points. otherwise the resulting gain of losing the other game first will be less than 1 point. 25 pts means around 225 points difference in rating. so, it's pretty meaningless wether you lose first or not.

Thanks for all the posts everyone... the rating system is pretty complex, I guess it talks about this in the FAQ's under the help link above.

Ya you tell 'em!

I remember we had another thread about this and we did some number and the difference was about 1 point after 5 games. It depends on the ratings but it's a big risk waiting till your opponents rating rises and then resigning your game.
