It's when your in a position where every move you make hurts you. Happens a lot in the endgame, rarely anywhere else.

So is a forced draw, or just a REALLY bad position to be in?

Here's a very simple example of mutual zugswang:


Each player prefers that it is the opponent's move.
With Black to move, it is a win for White.
With White to move, it is a draw.
