For me it was a 80 something lady. My mum brought me to her house when I was 6 before I had to go to school. She was doing some cleaning for that Lady.
Beat her around the 8-9 time we play together - or maybe she let me win to encourage me, who knows...

My dad, but he never played to win.
He always played for a stalemate or draw through repetitive position/checks. He said it was harder for him to play for a stalemate or repetitive check/position draw, than it was for him to play to win; and boy did he get a lot of stalemates and draws against me.
It amazes me to this day how he managed to get a stalemate or draw in so many ways.

I hated the place, and was always trying to run away.
The administrators of the camp, had a guy teach me chess, to keep me occupied.
The guy was an alcaholic, who had a general lousy attitude about life.
The way he taught me the way the pieces moved, was to describe the
movements, etc, and when it came to the royal couple:
"The king is an old man, he can only run one square at a time.
The queen is a young woman, and a bitch.
She wants to get her way, so she can move all over the board"
or something to that nature.
At least i remembered the way the queen moved.
Still trying to figure out how "the horsey" moves.
I learned to play from the Merit Student's Encyclopaedia when I was about 7 or 8. Taught my sister how to play and beat her a few games. Soon afterwards she got better than me and kept beating me. She has hardly played now so I have since overtaken her again. Although between that age and now, I hadn't played chess regularly until I joined this site.

I guess someone must have taught me the moves when I was a child, because I mostly knew how the pieces move when I started playing almost two years ago. It was probably my father (although he doesn't remember doing it) or my brother. I can't remember playing any games of chess as a child. When I took up chess as an adult, I didn't play a human until I knew I wouldn't look like a total idiot.
my dad just showed me the moves, he couldn't really play as such. Then I was hooked, went off and bought an electronic chess set, then discovered "castling". That's when i started beating my dad... he never heard of it - LOL - and refused to play me after that :-) Still makes me laugh... to this day he still thinks I'm making that up!
