i like it because it has no luck whatsoever. whenever i get beat at a game i'm like lets take this to the chessboard. especially if i lose at risk or something like that. then again its hard to find someone my age at 1600 in my area. nobody in america plays chess i swear unless their like 30. lol its just a fun game thats complicated.

I like chess because it diverts my attention from sex and death.

I like chess for many of the reasons already mentioned in this thread, and also because it is nice to have complete control over something in my life. This was pointed out to me in the introduction of a chess book I read, and i agree with it.

When you make a move you don't have to ask permission, negotiate, request or argue. It is your decision and yours alone. There are no dice, no cards, no random luck. All the necessary information is there for you to see, and your destiny is in your hands.

There are not many things in life you can say that about.

Hi
this is a question that's interested me for some time now. Though I agree that chess can be challenging, a puzzle, a battle, etc. I think it's more a non-verbal communication/understanding/touching of the other person.
Due to its limited area (the board) and vocabulary (its moves) you would expect chess to be far inferior to language in its ability to communicate and yet I often find the reverse true: that playing chess with someone gives me a more accurate 'understanding' of someone than if we'd spent the time talking.
And this is precisely BECAUSE of the the limitations of chess - we can only work with what we have: a measure of who we are is revealed by our reactions to certain situations and positions generated and shared by our partner.

I read a book by Dr. Reuben Fine years ago...can't remember the name. He said it was because we are all latent homosexuals.

Hi,
I wouldn't want to suggest that you or Dr.Fine stop thinking about 'latent homosexuality', but there's more than that, no?

i agree with the others earlier that it meets a need to intellectually dominate someone else...
nothing satisfies me more than seeing the expression on my opponent's face when he stalemates while up a queen and a rook...
even if it is a draw, in those situations, i feel as though i have won...

Hi,
an addiction has roots - usually to the non-benefit of the individual involved - that includes life denial/avoidance. Is chess that?

Hi Rubberjaw,

if chess just meets a need to 'intellectually dominate another', how do you explain the varied reactions to the game. Do you think Go players feel the same?

Absolutely, there's more. I think he said also we all want to kill our fathers which the King represents.

What's it mean if you prefer Knights to Bishops?

Hi Musscat,
if you think chess is about fathers/kings and mothers/queens and freuds/frauds, then fair enough..

Chess is a bit sad though.

Especially playing it on the internet.😉
