move 43 g4 looked good for me you can open up his kingside where your rook attacks the g file and your queen can double up on it for mate.

As it has already been said, the key point is the threefold repetition of the position. Perpetual check just being one way to force this situation, and not in itself another rule.

More than that. It must be dynamically the same so if en passant was possible the 1st time but not the third time then that does not count as a repetition, nor does it if everything is the same but it is a different player to move.

Edit - The repetition could, of course, be avoided by white playing Rf2 when the King escapes (to e2) from the repetition although white then may get mated by the Q & R.
