LOL...I still don't believe the question was answered, about what is considered to be playing a much lower rated person....How much lower rated would that person have to be?? I don't know how much rating actually even means on here, as you have no idea if your opponent is playing with what is between his ears or another source !!!

I personally don't like playing more than 200 pts difference in a rated game. I've found a lot of people who are substantially higher just enjoy playing chess. If you ask for an unrated game, lots of times they will accept a match just to help you learn more about the game. I've really enjoyed it. And it's been a big help. I consider these people teachers. What I do not consider helpful though is players who seem to use their point/tactical knowledge to pick on players who have much lower ratings as if a let's beat up the newbies.
Originally posted by AussiePeteVery soon you will see me doing this, I have worked very hard (too hard) to get my rating up to 2000, to the point where I don't enjoy it anymore. I am going to start playing with an otb style soon (once my league games have finished) and will be looking to play lower ranked players who are using databases/analyse board facility/plenty of time to analyse whereas I will not be and moving quicker as if I am in an otb match.
I wonder if anyone else feels the same about this as I do.
I frequently see players with invites open which are limited to players of a lower rank than theirs. Sometimes significantly lower, too.
I don't get it. Why would you want to play someone lower ranked. Isn't the whole point of chess to learn and improve. Surely its not to just beat up ...[text shortened]... ationally, if they have a good reason for choosing to play substantially lower ranked players?
Thanks for all the thoughts, folks. I had no idea I'd open such a Pandora's Box so quickly and easily 😉
I appreciate the considered responses. Much more helpful than the defensive pushback I normally get! There are some angles here I hadn't considered, but on balance I still consider it cowardly and rather bully-like to only play people so much lower.

No, record doesn't mean anything - that's why there are ratings.
You're wrong.
Say I could play 100 games against players rated 2200 and W25 D25 and L50 and that gets me a grade of 1900
or I could play 100 games against players rated 1600 and W50 D25 L25 and get a grade of 1900.
Whicj makes you feel better?
