Now it is reported that Kramnik will not go through with the unification FIDE had in mind. Of course, this only comes up after he squeaked by Leko. And of course after he had garnered the winner's share. Here we go again!

Did he give any reasons or just turn it down? I don't think he has too much to fear from kasparov, assuming he beat the new guy what ever his name is. If Kaspa lost though he might be in difficulty against a strong unknown. Though i can't see Kaspa loosing to him though.

Basically, he told that he agreed with FIDE to play the winner of match Kasparov - Ponomoryov, not Kasparov - Kasymdjanov. Chessbase posted just a short quintessence of his interview. In the original text he elaborated on this, stating that FIDE championship did not gather many strong players, that Pono was dumped by FIDE and that, based on his recent performance, Kasparov is not #1 anymore. All are, probably, valid points, but, as often happens, motives are questionable. His remarks about Kasparov, although politely shaped, do not look nice either. Resume: Kramnik goes with ACP, FIDE either accepts their conditions or ACP will carry its own worldchampionship cycle. Possible ACP proposal: Kramnik plays winner of the tournament of 4 (Kasparov, Anand, Pono and Kasym). I'd be interested to ask Kramnik why he did not announce this BEFORE his match with Leko😀

I really want to see play Kasparov, Kaza..., Ponomariov and Anand. It's a good and interesting idea.

That's true.

Maybe Leko tired him out. 😀

If he announced it before Leko, FIDE would have simply dropped him and made other arrangements. Now that he's "beaten" Leko, he is now one of the cogs in the world champ machine, and he can be as sticky as he likes. And then Kasparov won't approve of what Kramnik is doing, and meanwhile Anand is still standing around...Really, FIDE is a very badly run organization, but it's all we got right now. Others have come, been hyped and gone. Unless we want to go back to the good old days when a Steintz had to go begging sponsors to back a world match and pick whoever he wanted for an opponent...It'll become like professional boxing with dozens of world champions in each division and the public be damned.

I think FIDE should forget Kramnik, no concessions at all. I don't care if he's world champion, Kasparov, Anand, Pomonariov , Kasimdzhanov, and maybe even Morozevich have demonstrated to be at least as good as Kramnik. How about a round robin with Kasp, Anand, Pomo, and Kasim, for the championship and no Kramnik!

And hey, if they want to hold it in the federal pen, they could get Bobby in too!

ACP did not appear out of the blue - FIDE did (and still doing) everything to discredit itself. The fact that Kramnik uses this situation to secure the title without play is another story.

I'm a little weary of this business that a tied Championship goes to the champion. What if Kramnik had not made it to the finals and the match ended up tied? Would he STILL be the champion? This notion that a tie goes the to previuos champion is like a silly professional wrestling gimmick. I think its rediculous. Make someone win it outright...

Kramnik is the world champion--deal with it.

Kasparov will crush Pono next month.

Eventually Kramnik and Kasparov will play (when enough money is offered).

After the winner of that match loses to Anand, the disputes about reunification will become a matter of history.

Kasparov isn't playing Ponomarinov. He's playing Kasimdzhinov the winner of the FIDE KO WC.

Yes, my mistake. I was thinking Kasimdzhanov, while typing Ponomariov. Too early in the morning and I was thinking about Kramnik's recent complaints (that he agreed Kaspy would play Pono).

Kasparov will crush Kasimdzhanov in January.

Kramnik's ideals will be quickly forgotten when enough money is offered for the match against Kasparov.
