In reality, it is a time control. There's nothing wrong with claiming the win, particularly where the opponent hasn't sent you any messages or claimed to be on vacation. If the person ever sees fit to return and play, then you can always start another game.

otb you know your opponent used more time deliberately and gained better position for it, but ended up with time trouble. it was a more or less calculated risk that turned fatal.

in cc running out of time almost certainly happens because of illness, technical problems etc.

still, I'll click the skull when it appears if my opponent hasn't given any reason not to. it doesn't even have to be a good reason, all he needs to do is ask. but give no reason, and the skull gets it. 7 days is plenty of time.

The time expired, click the skull, them's the rules.

This is a problem......

If i timeout when losing or drawing I feel really bad about.....

I wish there was an option to "claim-timeout draw" or -- that way, when in a losing/drawing position, I can claim a draw, thus feeling less guilt about "skulling them" and have the ability to play a new game......

hmm....i wonder if that has ever been suggested??

Ah ethics.

This is what you do, let him know a draw is on the table, offer on to him if you must, if he declines then the next time time him out if that's how you feel.

But nevertheless - why have time limits in CC if there is no need to honor theese limits?

In PostCard CC there is time limits too, and there you can take vacation and the times are stopped. If sombody goes over the stipulited times he's lost. It's no morals involved there. Why is it here?

I shouldn't feel ashamed as having no morals if I skull a opponent out.

Under the circumstances that (1) he hasn't set the vacation flag, (2) hasn't told the opponents when he will be back, or (3) is playing under his own vacation I will certainly skull him out and proudly take the victory.

So far, I have only encountered a problem with ethics once, during this game.....

Game 1864882

I played rather foolishly in the opening (3.Bxh6!) and not before long, because of a little complacency I had lost a Rook

around move 19 he had used all his timebank and a nice skull was just hovering - but i didn't press it, simply because of guilt -- the game continued and I repeatedly sent reminders .....

eventually by move 27 I had won, so i finally clicked the skull....

in this game I played on, and won, which satisfied both my huge ego and my conscience -- however, thats not always going to be the case.......

I recon morals have less to do with claiming a time out victory that integrity.
If I am playing someone and it is through accepting an open invite (either them or me) We have agreed to the conditions of the game wether it is a one day time out with no timebank or a 7 day time out with 21 day time bank. The conditions of the game were set and accepted. When the skull appears kill the game. And I would expect someone to do that to me too.

However, in OTB I would time them out.
well I'm no proud either but i don't like to be waiting more than the specify time we agreed to play!!

I suggested it once but there didn't seem to be a great groundswell of support.

I just gained 40 rating points and a tournament win through an automatic timeout on some guy who returned to the site the following day. I was clearly losing one game and would probably have lost the other one too.

Problem is, I'm now over rated, have a pretty meaningless tournament victory and can only join banded tournaments at least fifty points above my rating.

It doesn't really matter in the scheme of things but I would like to have been able to resign the game I was definitely going to lose.

I'll claim any victory I can.

If a 7 day timebank has run out you are entitled to claim the win, your opponent should try to maintain a reasonable move rate, there are longer timelimits available for people who log onto the site infrequently. What you shouldn't do is start lots of 1/0 games with a strategy of trying to catch your opponent out with a loss on time.
