...You start looking for something else to do.

You see 3 games where it's your move, and you quickly flip over to you tube or Netflix because you don't want to deal with them.

You start thinking of chess in terms of reorganizing your playing area, and bookshelf.

You start looking for a fast move that won't hurt your chances rather than taking the time to find the best move you can.

You resign in positions where you're only slightly worse, just to get the game over with.

RHP and ICCF games have finished. Set, board, and books are sitting on a closet shelf, out of sight, and (most of the time) out of mind. 10 years of chess have come to an end, at least for now. I may return one day, but I don't know where or when.

I'd like to think most players go through this sometimes before returning feeling refreshed and eager to compete again, but for now, Mchill needs some time away.

I don't know about most players, but I do know my interest in chess is cyclical. It could even be called seasonal, because there isn't much else for me to do in the winter.
Even guys like Magnus Carlson will take occasional breaks from competitive chess, so you are definitely not alone.

the saying 2 too much of something is bad for you " .

I go through phases of not playing much, I have been playing online everyday since 2006... but this time I am sticking with the chess and going to get some wins at the congresses and make myself determined to get better.

Don't let others or anything put you off the chess ! Do what makes you happy !

I know what you mean.
I am in a similar position with another of my hobbies.
When it gets to the stage where it becomes a chore as opposed to fun it's probably time for a change, or at least a break.

I've been here for going on 18 years and I never had one game against you.

Maybe we will see you again one day.

Good Luck in what ever lays ahead.

Morris dancing isn't a hobby!
It's much more serious than that.
However I've never done any or had any inclination to.

It’s not really a hobby, it’s more of an obsession.

I gave it a try a few years ago, but couldn't quite synchronise the handkerchiefs.
