I think I'm going wrong somewhere. Firstly, the queen on E has to be on E6:

Next, the queen on C has to be on C7:

Now wherever you put a queen on the A file it covers both F squares and vice-versa.

Cant fault that logic! The only 8 queen solution I have seen is where all the Queens are the same knight-move apart (ie 2up 1right, 2up 1right, 2up 1right).

    Initial set-up must be wrong.

Here is my analysis of the problem in the next 3 posts (1 fen per post):

I've place Pawns on squares that are not attacked:

If a Queen were at e7, then that eliminates c7, d6 & d8 leaving only c2 and d2 for c and d files, therefore the e Queen must be on e4.

Thus a2 and c7 must be Queens, eliminating possible Queens for the d file.

I conclude that it is not possible

It cannot be done? I love these puzzles and this Problem CAN be done its not easy though,

The 8 Queens go on these exact Squares this wont work anywhere else, Try it yourself, not one Queen is threatening another Queen.
    From Line A-H
    Queens:
    1:a5
    2:b3
    3:c1
    4:d7
    5:e2
    6:f8
    7:g6
    8:h4

Try it out for yourself it works. Its Very Possible 🙂

Not only can your configuration be rotated 3 different ways, but there is an example in this thread of a solution with a Q on a center square. So, it's not quite true that the Queens must go on 'exact squares'.
