Gun, Bird & the Tree!!!

I'm sure most of you heard of this riddle back in kindigarten.

There are ten birds on the tree, if you shot one down with your lovely hunting gun, how many birds are left on the tree...*please be realistic

9, assuming that the other birds are baby birds and cant fly.
