playing a casual OTB game recently I was surpised to learn that you can lose versus a king and knight. anyone guess the position?

with no other material than your king? Then it must be the clock.

If not, then there are many options. E.g.

yikes, FEN's abit much for me. let me see.. white has pawn at h6, K at h7. black has K at f7, N at e6. black to move, mate in three

ah sorry, yes mephito, that's it right enough sorry.. not a puzzle, i just thought mate was unforcable with that material

Do you mean Black King at f8? Cos' that's easy.
1. Kf7
2. Kh8 Nf8
3. h7 Ng6#

Or King at f7? Equally easy.
1. Ng5+
2. Kh8 Kf8
3. h7 Nf7#

Don't be discouraged, it's just once the general idea's out it's easy to solve.
I still think my puzzles are improving.
