The link above is from the WHO's website, discussing the technique of making male mosquitos infertile, reduce the mosquito population, in order to control diseases such as chikungunya, dengue, and Zika. This is done by genetically modifying fertile males so that their male offspring are infertile.
It can be argued that mosquitos serve no vital role in the ecosystem and that their extinction may not negatively impact the environment. This can't be known for sure, of course.
