A very stable Co-free chatode was developed in the lab. Given the (relative) scarcity of Cobalt and the proposed incerase in battery driven vehicles, this is a step in a good direction.
The cathode still is mainly Nickel, so problems about raw matreials are far from over.

Not touting this as a breakthrough but just pointing out there are other chemistries out there and one of them will prove to be twice as energy dense as Lion and charge ten times faster so cars will have 1000 km ranges on a full charge., THAT is when EV's will take off. If you can 80% charge in 5 or 10 minutes that too will be a game changer. News at 11🙂
