As sonhouse pointed out the sheer mass loss by the comet indicates that it is at least not steered by any form of discernible intelligence. One would expect any starship commander to keep mass lsoss at a minimum.
IF mass was to be used then in a directed way, e.g. for accelerating/deccelerating.
What if some some post-incarnate but still strangely localized or individually coherent species with timeless cosmic scanning several aeons ago noticed our planet and thought "eventually that one will pop" and launched a physical vessel to arrive at just the right moment and the vessel would blow off some steam to call attention to itself on its way into our system? π
Plus, the less mass left, maybe the easier the toss to the next system they'd like to say hello to.
@Arkturos saidSignalling would have been done by unnatural blowing of. A directed burst of naterial into a unusual direction would certainly have had scientists scrambling

@Arkturos saidThe problem with that scenario is the stuff flying off is the result of it getting heated up by the sun since it is a lot closer now. That stuff is aiming right at the sun because the stuff is blowing off the surface by thawing out and blasting right towards the sun.

If for instance that stream hung a left and was aiming right at Earth maybe it could indicate something artificial but as it stands there is LITERALLY NOTHING artificial about it.
It is heating up by getting closer to the sun which is also not an artificial effect, it is totally natural and any comet flying the same angle and velocity would all do exactly the same thing.
It is some kind of mass wishful thinking it is alien tech at work.
@Ponderable saidThey know the orbit it is in pretty well by now and have a half dozen craft converging on it, at least get as close as they can. I think the ESA probe is the one coming closest, JUICE (Jupiter Icy moon probe) and ExoMars TGO which measured trace gasses, and HERA and Europa Clipper got to sample the tail of the comet.
Starting 2nd of November Juice (Jupiter icy moons explorer) will begin to have a look.
If any steering of the comet would have happened , that would most likely have been at the perihelion. So if no steering action was done, could everybody calm down on the spaceship theory?
Of course a lot of telescopes are watching, including the James Webb.
Probably the most studied comet in the history of astronomy.
But at 60 Km/second not a chance in hell of ANYTHING catching up to it.
The escape velocity of the solar system is about 45 Km/s which is the velocity of the two voyager probes, now out one light day from Earth.
@sonhouse saidI heard on the radio that's it has likely been wandering around in dark, deep space since before our sun existed.

That's an incredible feat. Send a probe immediately. I want to see what it's made of.
@mlb62 saidThat doesn't prove propulsion, it proves that it came from outside our solar system.
Comet 3I/Atlas could be hostile aliens....says Harvard's Avi Loeb / the comet is definitely being piloted !! We have only 1 year before it arrives on Earth. They predict Around August 2026...even traveling at 130,000 mph. there is NO object in our solar system capable of going that fast...which proves it has some sort of propulsion.. I have almost completed a very deep bomb shelter !!
@wildgrass saidI would like them to explain this newest sighting of an orange blob doing 283 miles per second, one million miles an hour. It seems whenever they took physics, if they did at all they seem to have forgotten orbital velocity shifts we already do by whipping a probe to skim above the atmosphere of some planet, say Venus, get a gravitational boost whipping around the planet, allowing the probe to go WAY further than it could have with just rocket power.

I guess there are some REALLY dumb folks writing really stupid stuff online.
@sonhouse saidYeah but at the same time it's really cool that we can see these "visitors" now whipping through the solar system. Like, does it even matter if sentient life is on it? That thing formed before our sun!!!

@wildgrass saidIndeed, but the conspiracy "theorists'' would not be ABLE to contemplate any of that REALLY interesting data, ONLY can I make this thing into my version of reality.

@Ponderable saidOOPs I wrote perihelion when I wanted to write aphelion... π

So 3I/Atlas behaves as if no steering took place. either the course wwas well preprogrammed (and Earth is not the finla destination) or it is not a spaceship.
@Ponderable saidI don't like how the net shows say ALIEN COMET GETTING CLOSER TO EARTH like we were in some kind of immediate danger.
There has been now the observation that after the aphelion the colour of the coma turned into green, hinting that carbonaceaous material has been evaporated and been splitted by the intense UV radiation.
What is the name of those kinds of headlines, there is a word for it.
168 MILLION miles at closest approach is not even CLOSE to being a threat, MARS is more of a threat, it gets less than 100 mil from Earthπ
I've just watched a documentary on sky history about aliens, cover ups by the military, conspiracy theories and the like. They only briefly mention time travel, presumably discounting it because of the grandmother paradox.
Isn't it strange, considering how different life forms have evolved on Earth, that alien sightings and the like all seem to have bodies just like us?
We know we now have technology for self drive vehicles, robots etc.
Isn't it a possibility that humans from our future have mastered time travel and built robot steered craft to observe life in the past ?
They wouldn't kill their own grandmothers
I suppose it's inevitable some may crash, hence Roswell etc.
