Sort of a tangent, but I've often fantasized about what it would be like to explore nature outside of scientific institutions. To have the sort of jobs I used to have--part time but very directly productive--and to spend the rest of my time playing with computer models, or scribbling equations. Being completely self-directed, rather than having every bit of my time eaten up (well, except the time I spend here!). A backyard scientist.

Like an Edison? Trying to come up with someone who matches that description.
