At the current time, what it used its huge nose for is pure speculation.

My dinosaur has a huge nose. Does that help it smell? No it smells terrible.

My guess is it resonated its honking or hooting or whatever sound it made.

There are a number of plausible reasons. Possibly it was sex linked, alternatively as the creature lived in swampy areas it could plausibly have been something to do with feeding.

I'm left wondering if you recognised the Monty Python sketch I was alluding to?

I saw the Brontosaurus sketch but that one didn't talk about the nose.

My brontosaurus has no nose!
Really, how does it smell?
Terribly!

In the original it's a dog and the joke's funny because of the way they did it. Intrinsically the joke's rubbish.

That is a stretch.

Here is a possible clue to why this dinosaur is nosy in the form of a nosy crocodile that lives today:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gharial

crocodiles are relatives of dinosaurs and this nosy crocodile uses its nose to attract a mate. -of course, it is a bit of a stretch to extrapolate from that.
