However, the way the phrase is used in the quote you give is quite different from what you meant. Bicycle conveyor belts would not get someone from rural Australia or Canada to university. Ooops there I go again.
Cycle from the farm to the onramp, clip on and you'll be at uni in no time, mate. The girls love that wind-ruffled look. Be sure to put on sun block, mind you.

In Zambia (a country with great distances) the university was about 500km away from my home. The conveyor belt would have to have been pretty fast. I hope the girls like the wind-stressed look too. 🙂

And solar power? With all the sunlight that you get... I'm jealous. It's not fair. You have all that glorious sunlight and hardly use any of it, and what have we got. Bicycle lanes.

I had a flash, what about solar powered bicycles? Same idea as before, enough battery charge to get to work, then solar power has all day long to recharge your battery.

Those exist already. The secret is to not put the panels on the bicycle!
I know someone back home who uses an electric bicycle and they are readily available here in Cape town. Solar panels are also readily available (just not very cheap for the better ones). So all you need is a spare battery and you leave one on charge while you use the other.

My mum imports low grade solar panels. They are very popular amongst rural people for powering radios etc instead of expensive batteries.
She also imported some solar ovens which are now being used at an orphanage. I think that was part of a Rotary Club project.

I'll be waiting in line when they start production (unless they are ridiculously expensive or unless I have already got myself and electric car from somewhere else).
Looks like they wont be available for general purchase for several years though 🙁

The solar ovens, are they the kind with mirrors? To me it seems such a ridiculously simple appliance, it would be a waste not to get one, but i have no idea how easy it is to cook food in there.

Or government sponsors pv panels on & off depending wether we have socialist or capitalists in the high seats, they take turns. Towards the end of the previous term when it came known that the subsidies were going to end many people bought panels at the last minute. i did too, but they did not fit on my roof, too narrow and too steep (the roof) so I passed them on to a friend. He enjoys them very much, even here where the weather is clouded 50%. My mother has a bigger roof on her house. She got an array of 16m2 and in the year after had loads of trouble with her electricity supplier because her meter turned back. It took some convincing to persuade them that really was because of those little panels. The most outrageous thing was that she had bought them via this same electricity supplier. Apparently they sold her something they didn't really think would actually work!

Electric bicycles are common here in Japan. Presumably they can be recharged using solar power, yet most electric in Japan is generated by nuclear (high population density).
