The solar ovens, are they the kind with mirrors? To me it seems such a ridiculously simple appliance, it would be a waste not to get one, but i have no idea how easy it is to cook food in there.

They are about 1m across and have a stand for the pot in the center. You turn it away from the sun while you place the pot then turn it to face the sun. They work quite well when the sun is shining but are really most suited to cooking large quantities at once - absolutely perfect for institutions.
Livingstone gets a lot of sun, so they can probably be used for a large part of the year.
