I saw a study done decades ago by MIT shouting about the overdosing of melatonin.
It is a hormone, not an herb is what they say, the body produces some 250 MICROGRAMS of mt a night.
So what do we see in the stores?
3000 mgms, 5000, 10,000 micrograms. Like you put sugar in your tea, but then keep adding more and more sugar, 5000 micrograms is some 20X your daily dose and it just floods the system and has health consequences as they say in this piece.
I think this melatonin business is just that, business, PUSH it on the consumer no matter what.
NOBODY can use more than 200 or so micrograms of MT, and unlike vitamin C, you consume too much C and you just pee the excess out. Not with a hormone....
@sonhouse saidEven at normal doses, its effect has been shown to be doubtful. Some people may fall asleep a little earlier, but show no improvement in the duration or quality of their sleep. And given how much your sleep is influenced by your state of mind, I suspect a lot of that is placebo.

@Shallow-Blue
My guess is the real dose should be more like ONE hundred micrograms, maybe just 50.
As a way just to top off what you already make and I suspect that it would take a huge study, blind studies to show any effect. We already know it is not good to take thousands of micrograms of Melatonin so maybe lesser doses, WAY lesser doses may help. I don't know if a study like that has been done.
