In that case, playing chess could be devastating: A pawn could slip off the table and land on a cat; the startled cat then jumps onto the dog; the dog then sprints away and bumps into your mother who is carrying a pot of boiling water, and the boiling water spills all over the dog.

I admit that possibility had never occurred to me.
How stupid and inconsiderate of me.
I will for now on take great care to not carelessly let a pawn slip off the table when playing chess.
