actually I don't think they could stop them becoming mainstream if the governments made it law that they become mainstream.
Judging purely by many governments reluctance to spend much more on renewables beyond a meaningless token gesture, I bet the real barrier is the governments.
For example, we have for here in the UK

This shows the true unofficial intent of the UK government; business-as-usual and **** the future of humanity because we don't care.
