Add to the Reply, Reply & Quote, and Edit options, a Delete option. With it the poster can thereby execute Edit or Delete, for a little while after posting.
This is like Undo Send in some email programs.
Make this Delete option available until another person has opened the post, but not after. Otherwise, replies to deleted posts may not make sense.
(If it is not possible to provide this "contingent" Delete as described above, this recommendation is withdrawn and the Edit option can continue to be used as available to delete the text of a post.)

But make sure the mods know why you are swearing! Something like:
I'm just trying to delete this f'ing post.

Thread 147565
Perhaps a few idiots would ruin threads by making deliberately 'enthralling' posts and then holding the page as long as possible, to wait for comments, and then just to delete them ( two browsers pages open, one open noting further comments and one 'holding' your own comment for a couple of hours enables editing for longer than normally possible )...the linked subsequent posts just sound like gibberish with 'post removed' notes everywhere...
I've seen pages like this, mods usually close them quite quickly or just completely remove them...
