Since there are a real lot of unused clans I suggest to introduce a feature for potential clan founders, offering them defunct clans first.

Of course clan leaders of said clans should give them up officially .

Actually, since clans can be renamed at will, it makes a ton of sense to simply give clan leaders an option in their settings: "Open for the taking"

That way, anyone wanting to start a clan can simply go and pick and choose among names and potential members and scores, etc, and away you go.

For those clan leaders that want to keep the legacy of their 60 points that their clan gained, then they don't have to set it available.

I'd still recommend that a stale clan with no activity after a certain period of time, say 6 months or a year, would be free game for anyone to claim.

Good suggestion. Recommended

What if the clans are only used for "talking purposes" amongst friends?

Would you class that as a defunct clan?

Not possible as you have no friends 🙂

I really think something along these lines would be great. I got [cid]52[cid] (shameless plug) by trawling the dead clans until I found one I liked and then PMing the members and sending feedback. Russ was really helpful. Really, you couldn't have asked him to be more helpful. Unless you want to run a one man clan I just think it's much more worthwhile to resurrect a dead one than create a new.

In the same way that we have a 'nominate new leader' button it would be useful to have a 'submit to the list for suckers who think they can handle it' list.

When I was doing my trawl I saw loads of them where the leader was offering it to anyone. A list would save potential leaders time and it would save Russ time as everything would be automated.

Perhaps a better option would be to allow clan leaders to dissolve their clan entirely. Just delete it into the ether.

This is evidently not possible due to the disruption of the clan database...
