I have a suggestion, why not make it so that under board settings you can customize the colors of the pieces!... Lets say that you choose the piece style "alpha" why not have the color of the pieces change along with either the board theme or have it so that you can choose the color of the pieces independent of the board theme and piece style... then we would be able to escape the drab black + white!!
