What about having an option for non-subscribers to donate what they can afford rather than subscribing - no other benefits would be expected.
The reasoning is they would then feel justified in blocking ads at the same time as contributing to the site.
It could also have the beneficial side-effect of cutting down the anti non-sub nastiness. There would not have to be any sign next to their names or any other changes. Maybe once a year an announcement of how many [not who] had donated.

Just a thought.

I would like to see some of our saintly subscribers exercise this option and prove to the world that they're making a great contribution to humanity without expecting extra features in return.

Some subscribers donate by buying non-subs subscriptions. Someone bought me a subscription last year out of the blue. I still don't know who. It expired recently and I rebought my sub myself. I don't know if I'd be a subscriber now if that sub hadn't been bought for me.

I have bought subscriptions for non subs before. Sadly not you, Xanth, but I like the option of remaining anonymous.

Previously I have chosen inteligent non-subs who have not moaned in the forums about subscriptions, but have got positive things to contribute to the site a year of TFC benefits. Sorry BigDogg looks like it won't be you either!

It would be helpful for those who live in third world economies.
Some people from Eastern european countries, or India for example, might not be able to afford $30 (this being a months earnings for some).
Unfortunately there would be too much abuse of this, i think, especially from those who are just too mean to contribute properly.

Well if it was an anonymous donation,[ie anonymous to other members] that would not really apply.
Would it?

As it would be to help the economics of the site and not as a flag to show how good/clever/generous you are. It would be a matter between the site owners and the donator.

Don't misunderstand me - I'm not saying for it to take the place of subscribing, but additional to, for non-subscribers who would like to contribute financially but do not want the subscriber benefits. There would be no extras for them in my scenario.

Then, if you send feedback, or PM russ, i'm sure he'll accept all donations.

I don't see why he wouldn't

Given a months subscription is less than £4 at the moment, wouldn't just buying one of those make sense?

Plus you get to try the subs features too?

I'm not saying "how can I donate?" I obviously realise I could personally just send a donation.
I'm saying it may be an idea to have a set option for it, for any non-subscriber.

Some don't have the time or desire for many games or tournaments/clans.
In fact I definately don't want more than 6 right now.

I appreciate your points, but there is nothing to say that you have to use the extra features of the site when you subscribe. You can subscribe and not use them...

You can call yourself a donor instead 🙂

... and just to pre-empt a sarcastic response from BigDogg, one of my clansmen likes to keep his game count down to 6 or so, and he doesn't seem to enter tournaments or sieges either. These people do exist.

Good point. That would be another approach I guess.
