Today somebody calling himself Gayfanfare started a thread in the General forum at (my time) 12.24. His last post in the thread appeared at 13.06. At 13.55 Iraqisgood appeared but only lasted until 13.57. At 14.06 Dreemars appeared, posted until 14.16. Thread 77670
This person was complaining that he had been banned for posting a link to a porn site, and clearly has registered 3 false accounts within a 2-hour period, just to post in a couple of threads.
My proposition is: when you register you can read the forums, but cannot post for, say, 7 days. This would discourage some of the undesirables who just register one name after another.
Does anyone think this is a good idea?
Originally posted by MissOleumI agree, and 7 days sounds reasonable to me.

Originally posted by MissOleumIt would be good, but what about users who need to post in the HELP forum?

Perhaps the Help forum could be accessible after, say, 4 hours. That could encourage new users to check out the FAQ first, and save a lot of repetitive threads. The 4 hours should be enough to deter the multipleaccount spammers.

I reckon RHP should take a tougher stance on banning. Kick the miscreants off the site and then report the incidents to the user's ISP. This kind of spamming and abuse is against the ToS of nearly all modern broadband contracts. If it's a personal connection they risk getting their service cancelled, if it's a corporate (schools, businesses, etc.) then the relevant IT department should be able to trace it back to the specific user and discipline them accordingly.
i agree that the best approach is to deal with each spammer as they reveal themselves. there may be a "technical" filter approach, but i'm not a techie. the whole serious computer techies of the world are, i hear, trying to solve the spammer problems. meanwhile, all the immature spammers of the world, the high tech version of urban graffiti miscreant scum, are busy finding new ways to bypass filters and continue to spew their trash into our lives.
the best solution, i find, is to use my personal ignore list. gee, that may be why no one ever answers me! hmmm. . . ..
I completely disagree with the idea. That was the best laugh I've had in these forums for months and months.
And as it has already been said - the help forum problem - if you allow people to use the help forum straight away, it would just move the problem. [not a problem to me btw] New unsatisfied people would surely just go elsewhere if they were told to "come back in 4 hours" or whenever.
We should encourage eejits like him [Gayboyfan or whatever] to continue to amuse us. 😉
At least we should give 'em 24 hours.
This post is my opinion only - and I'm sticking to it.
I agree with Daemon and Dr Strangelove.
I don't think there should be any restriction, but maybe better policing.
One thing that could be done is to make it more clear where to actually submit problems that would normally require the "submit feedback" button. It's not immediately clear that this link is where to go - so the help forum is used.
Maybe another link in the FAQ and as a sticky in the help forum for "Submit a help request" or something might help. THe link could essentially send a message to the same place, but might be a bit more intuitive.
