I'm mean so that the linked user gets a message. In long threads where posters dip in and out over extended periods this would be very useful.

I'm suggesting that the linkee gets a message saying that they were mentioned in a forum post, they can then perhaps click a link in the message which takes them to the post so they can easily reply.
For active posters this would make life a lot easier and help them track a specific conversation and bypass all the other dross if they want to.
Make any sense?
Edit: I think we are talking about the same thing.
