Why not a live chat room - like Internet Chess Club?

We had a chat room in the very early days. Sort of......

It was not on the RHP site, but was instead a private chatroom for RHP members only and was maintained on a seperate IRC site. The RHP site put up a link to connect to the chatroom but did not have anything else to do with running it. Live chat was a train-wreck for us. It lasted for just a few weeks before some of the RHP members of that time got it closed because they could not behave themselves and comply with the rules of conduct imposed by that particular IRC site.

If I remember it correctly it was just a few of our malcontents and drama queens that could not get along, so they tried to take out their animosity on each other in real-time on that chat site, and then they tried to drag it back into our forum. I guess you could call it our own little "Red Hot Soap Opera".

I'm pretty sure Russ remembers it well, and I'm also willing to bet that you will not see live chat on the RHP site any time soon! But then, I could be wrong.

    Yes, I agree! :-)

Actually our forums are very similar to a live chat room anyway, unless I'm missing something or if live chat has changed over the years.
Everyone who is currently logged in can participate in posting in any thread in 'real time' and get fairly quick responses.

You do need to refresh the browser often to keep up but that's not too difficult.

I have not looked at any chat rooms for years, but my opinion from past experience is that it was like hanging around in a giant room with many people all talking at the same time about several different topics and sometimes it was a nightmare to follow along or participate in anything.

Instead of one big 'free for all' chat room, our forums are an improvement because each forum is a separate room with different conversation threads! You can have several conversations going on at the same time and everything is organized and separated instead of all thrown onto one big page.
