I know this has been mentioned before, but I can show you what it looks like on another site http://www.bookcrossing.com/forum and if you liked it you could ask Ron how he does it. It shows how many new messages are in each forum since the last time you looked at that forum, and then on each thread how many messages are in the thread and how many of those are unread (were posted since you last accessed it).
