    Just a little idea :

why not delete the names off players who didn't play for more

then a year. Some have interesting names but didn't play more

then a few games and didn't even suscribe.

I, for exemple would have taken the name "blackbear" but couldn't.

It had been jused a long time ago. Too bad !

Good idea - but I would like to alter the proposal a bit:

Why not change the name BlackBear to BlackBearObsolete, or @BlackBear or something, with a prefix or an affix of some kind, in order to keep his games intact?

Further - Make it possible to change ones name into another name, perhaps with an approval from Russ, and the change info in the profile, so nice names can be reused without starting another account?

I, for one, would like to call me Fabian, and Fabian only, removing the fnas part.

    Even better.

    All for changing your name.

We have a rule in our clan that the name has to be an animal name

(clan = the Animals) and had to refuse some candidates for that.

What kind of weirdo would want an animal name?

Even easier - change the names of inactive players > 3 years to their UserIDs. That would free up a lot of good names which were used in the early years, but never since.

A very good idea. Actually better than my prefix/affix change.

One thing though - People changeng names again and again may be a problem. The name change have to be restricted in one way or another.

But freeing up old names - super!

So what happens when someone who has been inactive enough for their name to be changed becomes active again?

they are assigned a new user name consisting of a random and hard to remember sequence of letters numbers and punctuation marks, and thereby learn not to be inactive for so long next time. 'use it or lose it'!

if they can prove they hve been in a coma the whole time, they can get their old user name back, and the usurper gets their random user name for usurping.

I would have taken "terrier" but the name was used in '01! One year of unpaid inactivity should be enough to free the name - change it to the user id after that. These people will never be back and even if they are they'll pick a new name and cruise on with no problems.

of the 149 names that begin with 'sex', only seven have moved this year, and of these, only three have made it past 'p' status. in fact, of the 149, a very high proportion never made it past 'p'. these people clearly have hobbies other than chess.

The "sex' in their names might be a hint.
