Just an idea that I saw when I used to frequent Gameknot (Blasphemy I know!) When looking at a users profile, would it be possible to see how my rating would change if I played against the user? Example:

User X - Win against this player rating +25
Draw against this player rating -5
Loss against this player rating -100

What do others think of this?

Any enhancements add to the fun and friendliness of the site. I don't see any downside to this, so long as the challenger understands that the projections only apply to the current ratings. The opponent's rating can change by hundreds of points before the game is over making the prediction nonsensical. Anyone playing a few games should get a sense of how many points up or down their rating might go when the game is over.

Eloquently put, although I am disapointed that you think my idea is so poor that it doesn't even warrant a sentence!

I must say that I think this is a good idea.

I would, if I was a programmer at RHP staff, do like this: A button on the Main Board Page, when clicked, would produce a new small windows with the following message:
If this game is won right now you would recieve 15 rating points,
if lost you would lose 17 rating points,
if drawn you would lose 1 rating point.
or something like it.

This has been discussed before. RHP adjust rating points based on ratings at end of game. The other site does so based on rating at start of game.

End of day it is swings and roundabouts.

You play a 1400 rated player and at the end of the game they are rated at 1600.

Do you want points awarded for beating a 1400 rated player (The other site) or a 1600 rated player (here).

Using the other sites method you join a tournament and meet 4 players rated at 1800, 1900, 2000 and 2200. You are rated at 1600 and have been there or thereabouts for the last two years.

You are told your expected points for the wins are 20, 30, 40 and 60 per game so a total of 300 points if you win as black and white. You get really lucky and all your opponents time out so your rating jumps to 1900.

You now have an artificially high rating of 1900, a tournament entry rating of 1800 but are effectively a 1600 rated player. This is not good news for you.

Since both ratings can move up or down during the length of time it takes to play the game, any predicted points effect is meaningless. What would be more useful would be a copy of the rating change calculator (see Thread 80000 ) located in one of the drop-down menus (the coloured bar) where it could be readily accessed at any time during the game. Then we could use the most recent rating information to obtain the points figures. Only a minor programming job, I would expect, with only fixed numbers involved.

A rating calculator that calculates the changes according to the ratings at the start of a game is meaningless, who wants such a thing.

A rating calculator for a particular game that take the current ratings into account, and th rating change if you or your opponent happens to have a provisional rating, and that change when your opponents rating and status changes.

I think my idea is good with a rating calculation button is introduced in every "Main Board Page" that gives the change if the game is ended in that very moment in particular.

Thanks for supporting my idea FF. I'm not sure where the "button" should be but the playing page seems the most logical place.
