when they get long, after about 26 pages, its too much hassle to get to the most recent posts. could you have page 1 followed by the most recent 6 pages instead? better for everyone.

I think that it misses the point. How about a skip process? Like threads 1-20, then 20-40 etc?
When I want to skip to a page that I cannot see at the line of pages links in blue, I change the pageno in the addess line, the URL. Then I can very easy go to the page that I want.
