How about making a new class of tournament that uses highest rank ever (instead of last 100 days) to determine entry?
This would mostly benefit low-rated players (such myself) by providing a place to compete where they wouldn't have to face sandbaggers.
sandbaggers: high-ranked players who have a temporary low rank due to a run of time-outs or resignations.
A reasonable enough idea I suppose - so long as the new "absolute banding" is the exception rather than the rule.
Why? Because I think there are more users with rating spikes over time than there are deliberate sandbaggers. The absolute or "all time highest" rating affects a lot of players.
I hope so. It just seems like there are always a few of these guys in every low-ranking banded tournament. Their rating graph looks like a big "V" that shows, after timing out a bunch of games to lower their rating, they immediately jumped into a low-ranking banded tournament.
Or highest rating ever, rounded down to the nearest fifty, could be your class.
Example:
Your highest rating ever: 1579 (rounded down) -> 1550
Then you could have participate in the absolute 1550 class. All the players in the class would have had at some point a rating between 1550 and 1599. If they had ever had a rating of 1600, they would fall in the absolute 1600 class.
