By which I mean place some arbitrary limit the size of each post. My limited attention span is just not up to taking in some of the walls of text I encounter in Spirituality, and I'm not even young.

Perhaps it's more helpful to server space any amount of condensing, but the fact that the average attention span is now so limited is BECAUSE of 'twitterspeak' and 'sms speak'(!?).....there is a theory that maybe folk believe their time too precious and we will all one day write this 'briefly':
'gr8,cn't w8!' ...sadly, due to unsolicited nonsense texts being forwarded to my own fone, I now seem perfectly able to 'translate' such tripe at a moments notice... but I'm relieved nobody has tried to post anything remotely sms speak in any RHP forum ....welllll, that that I'm aware of anyway 😉

The 2000-character limit, as on PMs, would be fine, most posters wouldn't notice and the ones to say with something that needs more than 2000 characters would be encouraged to choose their words carefully. Of course they could use multiple posts, but that requires a bit of extra effort.

There already is a limit on the size of the posts. It's just not well publicized.

What is the limit then? I've seen forum posts that extended well past a full screen in very small text.

That is pretty long. That's like, what, 1500 words? That's an essay!

It could be less without damaging most posts, sure.

If this is changed, there should also be a character counter like there is for PM's.

Agreed. What length do people consider reasonable? 4000 perhaps?

As you suggested earlier, I think 2000 would be nearer the mark. I doubt I've ever exceeded that, and if I did it was replying point-for-point to a wall of text.

I'd go along with 4000.

Hey, before you all decide to condense whatever 'real estate' is available here, some of us actually use the 9997 characters or whatever it is...it's a full page anyway ( I think it's the same characters in-game also as anyone that cares to yap to me will testify to that fact ).. leave it well alone, I just can't see what difference it makes, the space is there if you want it and if you care not to utilise nor read it's 'extent' then just bloody well ignore it !

Maybe we should implement a feature that would still allow 10000 characters per post, but only display 2000 characters per post at first. If you want to see the whole post, you can click on an 'expand' button and show the whole post. This would allow those who want cleaner navigation through the forums to avoid any screeds they don't want to read, yet still allow the windier posts to be read if people want to read them.

Yes, very good idea, simple but effective...
..and, a little off topic, the thought just occurred to me that if you can 'disable' in-game comments by the same 'expand' method you mention, then it'd be an easy fix for us to disable any persons comments 'across site' only until we wish to expand and read them...perhaps that's how the 'ignore' feature works anyway ?

That's a pretty good idea, I'd vote for it.
