First I would modify the home page game that is shown and make it a mate in one puzzle to give it some interactivity and encourage players to interact with the home page

second (this may exist) i would like to be able to send and receive messages to my opponent at any point in the game , not just when it is my turn.

I support the first suggestion.

Having Messaging apart from making moves will be very difficult to implement I fear. Just send a "normal" personal message via the site. (Yes I know thye are limited for non-Subs, but so are games).
