World Cup tournament?
21 Dec '08 12:38So we have knockout tournaments, Sieges, gouptournaments, etc.
But why not combine these to get a new sort of tournament?
The following is inspired (copied) from FIFA:
Timesettings: 3/7 or 7/7
Tournament setup
128 players, play in 16 groups of 8
The players are put into the qualifying groups at random
Qualifying stage
The first two players of each group qualify for the “Endround”
If one or more players have to same amount of points for the second place. The following deciders should be used.
- The result in their games
- The most number of wins
- The most number of wins with black
- The lowest rated player (Rating at the start of the tournament) wins.
- Lottery
This leaves a total of 32 players which qualify for the Endround
End Round
32 players, play in 8 groups of 4 ( Group A-H)
The players are put into groups at random
The first two players of each group qualify for the “Knockout stage”
If players tie for first or second place, the some deciders as in the “Qualifying stage” will be used.
Knockout stage
16 players play in the knockout stage
If a match is tied. Immediatly 2 adjunct games will start at a 1/0 timecontrol
If the adjunct games are tied, then the players will play 4 blitz games on FICS to decide the winner
If the 4 blitz games are tied, the players will continue playing 2 blitz games until a winner is declared
If a player refuses to coöperate to play the blitz games then (s)he forfeits.
If both players coöperate but it truly is impossible to come to a matchup then, the winner shall be decided by lottery.
In the knock out stage we get the following games:
1) A1-B2
2) C1-D2
3) E1-F2
4) G1-H2
5) B1-A2
6) D1-C2
7) F1-E2
8) H1-G2
QF1) Winner 1 – Winner 2
QF2) Winner 3 – Winner 4
QF3) Winner 5 – Winner 6
QF4) Winner 7 – Winner 8
SF1) Winner QF1 – Winner QF2
SF2) Winner QF3 – Winner QF4
3th/4t place) Loser SF1-Loser SF2
Final) Winner SF1-Winner SF2
When the tournament is over, The winner is registered (as in siegeplay) and automaticly qualifies him/herself for the endround of the next “WorldCup”
