I think it's also down to the evolution of humans. In the day you can see predators coming easier and your routes for fleeing/hunting/resource collection are more accessible. In the dark these things become more difficult. Consequently those pre-humans that understand the uses of dark and light best are more likely to succeed. This, I imagine, has transfered into the culture of teaching progeny etc. Parents might tell their children ghost stories to reinforce this seperation for example.

WHY IS BLACK OR DARK SAID TO BE BAD AND WHITE OR LIGHT IS SAID TO BE GOOD.
I also think that it started in the bible, where Jesus calls Himself "The Light of the World"....He also said something about stumbling in the dark, as Canada guy alluded.
It is also found in the Old Testament...
Gen 1:3-5
3 Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day.

Eccl 2:13
13 Then I saw that wisdom excels folly as light excels darkness.

Light displaces darkness, so I guess it is greater.
John 1:5
5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
