And when Man gained dominion
over land and the oceans
he began to harm the planet
with his asphalt and his toxins
and to lay the forest bare
and to poison even the air
and he killed every beast
and taught the seas how to bleed
Burned by the fire we make,
what a shame
Then the winds gave in
and the rain knew no season
and the sun came to beat
on a land of sand and diseases
and when God looked down
on the earth and saw it was broken
then the tears of God fell down
through a hole in the ozone
Burned by the fire we make
what a shame
This is the nature of the human race
to kill off anything that gets in our way
poor Mother Earth we disfigured her face
Man is the maker of his own disgrace
Burned by the fire we make
what a shame

God knew the earth would be broken long before it was. It’s not something he “discovered” or was “surprised” by.

Not immediately after he gained dominion, but a very short time after that.

I dunno, he seemed surprised that he got so cheesed off at man that he nearly wiped us out.

Yeah, that’s a good point.

The planet will outlive us by billions of years. It will laugh at the temporary smudge of humanity that once rested upon it. It will heal, as it always does.

I agree. I am an optimist and it is an optimism that has plenty of empirical underpinning. The 30-year-old song is a snapshot of why one might feel pessimistic about the state of affairs in the world.

Wether it heals or doesn’t heal is surely irrelevant to the atheistic mindset. The only importance our planet has is attributed to it by our own perception of our own importance. We are surely nothing, a biological blip, a virus, a rare anomaly in the vast cold mostly empty cosmos.

In a few billion years, a microsecond in the expanse of universal time, our sun will expand as a Red Giant and engulf this planet.

The end may not be nigh from our perspective, but it is inevitable.

People like Christopher Hitchens have an 'atheistic mindset'.

The rest of us are just regular people who don't believe in gods. To us, 'atheism' is irrelevant to the topic at hand.

Ok let’s ignore my obviously misplaced reference to atheism in this spirituality forum.

What about the main thrust of my post?

What about it? It seemed a rather bleak view of things.

I guess you don’t believe what Jesus Christ said about the End Times.

No surprise there.
