Thoughts?
If the events are being held on French territory, then I think the French do get to set the rules, just as Muslim-majority countries get to set the rules re: how to behave in their countries.
I remember there was a time when the French didn't want borrowed words like "jeans" or "skyscrapers" to pollute their language.
On the other hand, France did set itself up for some blowback in its colonial days.
