Had you been alive back then, you likely would have recommended Jesus to be crucified, since you are apparently most inclined to rely on doctrine. That is exactly what the religious "authorities" of that time did as well.
And as far as Jesus "returning on clouds", rest assured that if that happened he'd either be shot down by F-16s or dismissed as a Steven Spielberg promotion.
You can't look to the clouds. You have to follow the essence of Christ's teaching, which is summarized in Luke -- "the kindgom of heaven is within." That means, in essence, find out who you are, beyond doctrine, beyond mere mechanical recitation of scripture.
