1. What is "very illiterate"? I thought people were either literate (i.e. know how to read and write) or they were not.

2. Since when did knowing who Oedipus was become a condition of literacy?

According to Webster
illiterate:
Function: adjective
1 : having little or no education; especially : unable to read or write
2 a : showing or marked by a lack of familiarity with language and literature b : violating approved patterns of speaking or writing
3 : showing or marked by a lack of acquaintance with the fundamentals of a particular field of knowledge

He could possibly have got away with 2.a. but adding the 'very' means that he is probably illiterate by the same definition.

I too had not heard of Oedipus and although I did look him up and found him I did not find references to Oedipusic in the dictionary. I did find Oedipus complex and Oedipally.
