Well i think it is rather clear.

If you love your life, you will live for yourself, do for yourself etc and by doing so you will lose eternal life (die)

If you hate your life, (in context) it is referring to not living for yourself but to live for God, do for God etc, and by doing so you will have eternal life.
To sum, live not for yourself but for something greater, more important than your 7-11 slurpee or your other selfish desires. Live for God and you will live.

*But you are not saved by works but by faith. And with faith you cannot help but do works*
