I think the membership of his particular cult fall into two camps, the vulnerable members manipulated into joining, controlled once there and prevented from leaving (by a number of coercive measures) and those members who perhaps have little going for them in the real world and find within their Kingdom Hall a place where they feel that have some significance and cause for religious swagger. - Galveston I think falls into the second camp. Yes, he is a deluded fellow happy to be spoon-fed what to believe and regurgitate on people's doorsteps, but is also a rather smug character who like's to think he presents a truth nobody else is seeing and will pay the price for their ignorance. For this reason he probably doesn't feel trapped. Being a JW is all he has going for him.

As a member of the Borg, he simply can't disconnect from the collective. He has lost the ability to think for himself.

I'm not in a cult. If this was a cult I wouldn't have anything to do with it. Most JW's came from other religions and the reason they left their original religions is because those religions do not follow the Bible. Most of their beliefs have been influenced by paganistic teachings, such as the trinity. They all fail in doing the door to door ministry that Jesus himsel ...[text shortened]... all the other so called Christian religions fail in this? Maybe they are all the ones who are cults?
The primary function of any addictive drug, such as heroin or morphine, is to give the addict a pleasantly giddy feeling which masks the drug’s toxic effect upon the user. This is also the primary function of any cult. The secondary function of any cult is to persuade its participants that they are not in a cult.

Educate yourself. Go ask the Jehovah’s Witnesses what they think about education. The last one I talked to informed me that education is like polishing the brass on a sinking ship. There you have the cultist mentality in a nutshell.

Yeah .. that education thing among JWs is worse that polishing brass, which is really a useless activity. It is considered spiritually dangerous. What that means is that educated people with some knowledge are likely, not only to ask difficult questions, but actively seek out answers which will conflict with the Watchtower teachings. There are several reports of teenagers wanting to go off to college and the JW parents told them that they will not support then through those years. Truly a dangerous cult. Dont expect poor Galveston to see that when he cannot see far more obvious things in front his nose.

So the issue is simply the government not giving them money. They are still free to practice their religion, right?

I hope they move against Science-fiction-tology (L. Ron Hubbard’s money-making machine ) next.
Probably not. Too many people with more money than God are tied to it.

(Tommy, boy, I'm looking at you!)

It is sad that this has happened. Hopefully in time the government officials will see Jehovah's viewpoint and actual commands on ones who have to eventually be disfellowshipped. I can re post all the scriptures that clearly show Jehovah's viewpoints and commands to stop associating with ones on who decide to practice what Jehovah calls gross sins. But so ...[text shortened]... ds no matter what individuals, governments of posters here at RHP say. Sorry......................
I still cannot get past that their doctrines come wholly from the minds of men.

Their scripture was created in support of that man-made doctrine, not the other way 'round.

The government (at least the US government) is prohibited from giving any money to churches (aside from tax breaks, which are given to ALL churches, even questionable ones, such as Scientology).

This is enshrined in the Establishment clause of the First Amendment.

So...... this subject has been discussed many times. It is very obvious that the majority of all here do not agree with the JW's stand on not being allowed to fellowship freely with ones (which is only a temporary event) who do not show remorse for certain serious sins they comment. They are usually still allowed to attend meetings and even have their presence acknowledged by a simple greeting as long as there is no disturbances from them.
In their family settings at home there is still the normal daily family interactions allowed, but no discussions of spiritual matters. They have Jehovah to rely on for that in prayer as those matters have to be between themselves and Jehovah.

A couple questions.....
What examples are given in the bible of ones who commented serious sins in the past? Are we to ignore those examples? What was God's standards then? Have they changed?
No we do not take one out and stone them to death who has committed a serious sin such as fornication or adultery for example as God had required in the past. Why did he require such a serious action?
But what if he did now? Who here would follow his laws today?

What about most of the posters here who's governments make laws they have been established to protect their citizens from one's who (practice) breaking the laws of their country? From time to time someone may break the law of their country, like speeding down the highway. Are you thrown in jail the first time? No. But if you continually do that, you will no doubt be penalized more harshly as time goes by. Maybe you will loose your license and told to never drive again. Your country has those laws to protect the majority. If those laws were not enforced, what could be the consequences to others?

So now what does God say in his book the Bible about someone who ((((practices sin))))) and shows no remorse? Not the everyday sins we all do but the one who shows no remorse or who does it over and over again even though they still associate with ones at the meetings and even family members who want to serve Jehovah?

What did Jesus say? Matt 18:15, “Moreover, if your brother commits a sin, go and reveal his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take along with you one or two more, so that on the testimony of two or three witnesses on every matter may be established. 17 If he does not listen to them, speak to the congregation. If he does not listen even to the congregation, let him be to you just as a man of the nations and as a tax collector."

Tax collectors were usually never associated with because they were usually not trusted.

The much hoped for result for ones who are removed from associating is for them to eventually take Jehovah's laws seriously and eventually return to the congregation with an honest heart in wanting to serve Jehovah and cause no harm to the congregation.

Jehovah's Witnesses have and will always do as Jehovah says...period. We do not give into pressures of mans guilt trips no matter how much pressure ones here put on us. We only answer to Jehovah.......
