galveston75 has often asserted that all these terrible things are much worse now and that things were better in the past. I personally don't think that this is true. I am curious as to whether he thinks that the story he has cited is an indication that the world is just getting worse and worse, or whether such killings have always been a feature of everyday life and may even perhaps have been more prevalent in the past.

So much for the Christian who loves us and wants to give us the good news.
How does this view of yours fit in with God's plan for you Bobby?
Having said all that I do agree with the point of view, but then I am not religious
like Bobby claims to be.
I agree with the sheriff. I would be packed every day like Josey Wales.
Shoot to kill that's what I say. Make sure the b*******d doesn't live to sue you.
You either live life right or else you get punished. Jail or bullets it's all
the same to me.
And if you take me out I'll sure as hell make sure you're dead too.
Do you feel lucky??????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Damned straight!!!

I think, despite all the contemporary tabloid headlines and YouTube clips, and the 24/7 news-advertising cycle, society was more violent and citizens were more in danger from arbitrary and fiat violence in the past than they are now.

1. Ask your visitor to wait.
2. Go to study.
3. Unlock desk drawer.
4. take out gun and ammo.
5. Load gun.
6. test fire.
7. return to visitor.
Then shoot
... or do you greet everyone at the door with a loaded weapon?

And beat the dogs and cheat the cold electronic eyes
And if you make it past the shotgun in the hall,
Dial the combination, open the priesthole
And if I'm in I'll tell you what's behind the wall.
roger waters - the final cut

Study local statutory and case law on charges of excessive force in self defense.
Here is one discussion.
http://www.shouselaw.com/self-defense.html#1
See if the lessons support or challenge your beliefs about what is morally justified.
To the extent that you think reasonable, modify your environment, train your children, etc. to limit situations that require the use of force in self defense.
Become proficient in the methods of self defense you might have to use, including moderate ones.
Realize that if and when the time comes, you will not have much time to deliberate.
